FUR ON THE ASPHALT: A GREG THE BUNNY REUNION SPECIAL (2005)
After the cancellation of the Fox Series and it’s successful release on DVD, Greg the Bunny was resurrected by the Independent Film Channel. This half-hour special was a re-introduction to the main puppet characters – Greg, Warren and Count Blah. Since Tardy Turtle and other puppets created soley for the Fox Show were now the property of Fox, they sadly had to be left behind. Pal Friendlies, a puppet character not seen since the “Rapture” episode of the 1999 series, was completely re-designed and introduced as Greg and Warren’s agent.
Greg’s appearance was modified from the Fox version to appear as he did on the original IFC series back in 1999. This meant he once again had buttons for eyes, which remain on him to this day. Unlike the original Greg, he did have a moving mouth in this special, though that too would be gone by the time a new series began.
The special set out to re-introduce the characters, under the real-life premise that their television sitcom had been cancelled and they were now out of work. Rather than mention the GTB sitcom that aired on Fox, a fictional sitcom called “Oh You Two!” was created. This let the creators poke fun at the Fox series and more cheesy shows like “Saved by the Bell.” It is featured in this episode as a clip starring Greg, Seth Green and Clint Howard.
Other cameos by the Fox cast returned for this reunion, including Sarah Silverman (as herself) and Bob Gunton, who reprised his most famous role – the Warden from “Shawshank Redemption.” (Eugene Levy and Dina Waters were not available at the time of production but have assured cameo roles in upcoming GTB work. ) The special aired in 2005 on the IFC network.
THE STORY:
The Fox show has been cancelled and Greg and Warren are out of a job. Encouraged by puppet agent Pal Friendlies to star in a new IFC special, Greg and Warren must unite and go to Vegas in order to recruit fellow fallen star, Count Blah. What ensues is thirty minutes of debauchery and irreverence, completely unsuitable for family viewing. Blah, (who sings his version of “Man in Motion, The Theme from St. Elmo’s Fire,” at a local nightclub) refuses to return to IFC. Meanwhile, Warren loses his shirt (not that he wears one) at the poker tables, until he learns that Greg is an idiot savant and (like Rain Man) is able to count cards. They win big and score with a pair of human hookers. But the good life is fleeting when Greg, after losing his virginity and innocence – can suddenly no longer count the cards. To make matters worse, Warren is arrested by police detectives for asphyxiating his prostitute. Our heroes end up in jail, where they meet the Warden (Bob Gunton, reprising his role from “The Shawshank Redemption.”) Other human guest stars include Fox alum Seth Green and Sarah Silverman (as themselves) and featured cameos from Jon Favreau, Adam Goldberg, Clint Howard, Martha Plimpton and Lou Ferigno.
